Hit and Run on a Bicycle
It is possible to commit a hit and run as a bike rider. Apparently, that happened on a DC street when a bicyclist struck an elderly couple walking on Massachusetts Avenue NW last week, resulting in critical injuries to the man.It is certainly more common for a bicycle rider to be the victim of a hit and run by a car. But a fast moving bike can cause serious injury to pedestrians, also. And the law applies to any person operating a vehicle, of which a bike typically qualifies. The law requiring a person who injures someone while operating a vehicle to stop and offer assistance.
The penalties for failure to stop and leave the scene of an accident with an injury under DC law  is up to 6 months in jail, and a $500 fine for a 1st offense.
More details about the search for the rider at the Washington Post.
